Dhauladhar - Pir Panjal Traverse over Indrahar( 4,350m) & Kugti Pass( 5,040m)
This is the most popular trek out of Mcleodganj upto Bharmour valley. This trek has been specially designed for serious trekkers who want to experience the best of nature, as most of the people conclude this trek in Bharmour and for us, the real journey starts afterwards, entering into the unexplored and thrilling Chandra valley. The trekking routes over the Dhauladhars have been followed for generations by the Gaddis, the nomadic shepherds of this region. The first destination of this trek is at Triund- an ideal place to spend a night as it offers a magnificent view of the entire Kangra Valley. The next trail ascends gently through oak and pine forests and across open meadows to the shepherd encampment at Lakagot, from here it is a tiring scramble for the next camp at Lahesh cave which is big enough to house a large party of potters, trekkers and shepherds. Further ascending takes you to the Inrahar pass(, the view from the pass is very impressive. The descend from the pass is initially very steep trailing down to the next camp. The next camp is at Kuarsi village. While descending to the valley one can see Ravi river forging its way down the gorges. Next days trek is a level walk up till Bharmour, the ancient capital of the Chamba state and also the base for treks over the Pir Panjal range to the Chandra Valley. The trek from Bharmour to Hadsar is a normal walk on the road, jeeps can also be used up till Hadsar. From Hadsar the trails enters a narrow valley towards Kugti village, 13 km away. Camping site is closer to the village. From Kugti the trail winds up through the forests and fields to the Keylong temple, from the temple the trail ascends steeply in places to a series of meadows and finally reaches Duggi cave. From camp the climb to the base of Kugti pass is gradual, the camp at Alayas is set in a small meadow amid extensive boulder fields. Alayas to Kugti starts with a gradual climb later involving a steep ascent for some 300m, the Kugti pass is a small gap in the upper wall of the Pir Panjal range. The next camp is pitched near a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva which includes somewhat 4hours of descending. From the temple the trail traverses the upper grazing point to a minor pass with good views down the Chandra Valley. From the minor pass there is steep descend down the grazing trails to the village of Rape alongside the Chandra river. The road linking Udaipur and Tandi is on the other side of the village.
